Preparation: Methylcellulose is a non-ionic cellulose ether, made by introducing methyl groups into cellulose through etherification. It is generally considered safe, non-toxic, non-sensitizing, and non-irritating.
Applications:
In the pharmaceutical industry, low or medium viscosity methylcellulose can be used as a binder for tablets and can also be used for tablet coating.
High viscosity methylcellulose can be used to modify disintegration or as a matrix material for sustained-release formulations. High-substitution, low-viscosity methylcellulose can be used for aqueous coatings, and can also serve as a suspending agent, thickener, emulsion stabilizer, and protective colloid.
High-substitution, high-viscosity methylcellulose can be used in eye drops and can also be used as a base material for creams or gels.
